Is my Dad too cheap or is he insane?

Posted by admin on Mar 6, 2010

My Dad recently lost his job. As a result, he has imposed all these rules to save money. I think they are rather extreme. He says, we have no choice. What do you think? Here are some changes we have made:
- We are only allowed 2 showers a week. The shower protocol is: turn on shower for 10 seconds, shut off water and soap up; turn shower back on and rinse for no longer than 2-3 minutes. He also has us using free soap/shampoo samples he stole from some local hotel/motel.
-We can’t wash towels anymore. The towels are all stinky after multiple uses and starting to smell like meldew. He says we can air dry
- We are required to cut back on toliet paper use and we arent allowed to flush the toliet. He flushes it once in the morning. It is really gross to come home from school then use the bathroom. It is usually filled with urine and feces by the time I get home. He insists on flushing in the morning that way it can sit overnight and it doesnt stand a chance of clogging. SOmething about the water breaking everything down overnight so its flushes better
-We steal WIFI from the neighbors
-We have starting eating $1 cheeseburgers from burgerking or the 2 for $3.33 fish fillets from mcdonalds for dinner. He says its cheaper than creating a bunch of dirty dishes and paying for groceries.

Is this too extreme? I am thinking of talking to my teacher about it. He also says we can not turn the heat above 60 degrees in the house and arent allowed to have any lights on past 8pm.

why dont you give him some of that money you’re paying women to go para-sailing lol ;)

I’m gonna vote for insanity…and controlling, and he is probably so lost that he can’t figure out any other way to control what’s happening, than to make stupid demands like this. It’s deeper than what you see on the outside.

Your Father is not insane. He is quite in touch with reality and knows the status of his family finances better than you do. To you this might sound extreme, but he is being a very brave man to incorporate as many savings as he can in order to keep his family together. Don’t second guess him. He is trying in the only way that he knows how to support his family.

I like this quote:

"Exactness and neatness in moderation is a virtue, but carried to extremes narrows the mind."

…which would lead me to believe it could lead to INSANITY! seriously. Im sorry you have to live this way.

What he is doing, is not good for your health in any way really. 2 showers a week- you will probably go to school and people MIGHT notice that..

Mildew is not good for you..if you breath it, i know its bad (like mold) ..can cause respiratory problems i think..and im sure if the towels are getting that way, they wont last long anyway- and you will have to buy new ones, costing more money.

I can understand cutting back on toilet paper..its easy to go in and just grab a whoooollle ‘wad’ of it..my parents use to tell us to ‘count how many sheets we use’ …but you cant go to extremes with that either. There are other ways to save water. Tell him to full some kind of jar or something with water, and put it into the back of the tank to occupy space (instead of water occupying space). (how much water you have in the tank is how much will flush into the bowl, so if you put something else in to occupy space, you wont be using as much water) ..hope that made sence. Plus no one wants to live with that smell! ..and your privacy is out the window if everyone is forced to see your ‘junk’ you’ve left behind…just my opinion.

Stealing WIFI–i believe my brother, or someone told me its not illegal…dont quote me on that though, it could be different where you are, and if so- he’s not setting a good example.

Cheeseburgers and fish filets from fast food places?? YEAHH their cheaper now, but what is he doing to your bodys?? You’ll have to live with the LONG TERM consequences of that one!! Clogged arteries…plus, does he realize what people put into those things?? i’ve heard there are TONS of ingredients that go into making a ‘fish fillet’ from McDonalds……..could these ingredients cause problems like cancer down the road? well..we dont know FOR SURE..(maybe I just dontknow) but they could…….

Okay Dad, i know you are goin through some hard times, but you’ve got to try to re evaluate what you are doing. Its not healthy, and you may want to try to get him to read people’s responses to this question…(print it out if you have to and leave it for him to read if he wont listen) …or if you have to, talk to your teacher. They are there to help you- or atleast they should be. Im sure your dad is not a horrible person, but he needs a reality check if you ask me.

That is pretty extreme….and completely unhealthy. and for some reason I feel like you probably aren’t saving that much money for all the pain you are suffering!!! how old are you??? do YOU have a job, or your siblings if you have any?? is he collecting unemployment? is he looking for a new job?? If you have a job then contribute to the household, if not then get a job unless you are under 16. He needs to find a new job, even if it’s only temporary until he finds a better one.
