Which job to take?

Posted by admin on Feb 26, 2010

My husband has been offered two jobs in food sales. Here are the pros and cons of each.
Job 1 Pros: $500 a month for car allowance plus all gas paid for, credit for cell phone use, full health coverage, he’ll get to do some cooking still which he likes cause he is a chef now, lots of free food to take home and sample (so save on groceries), great company to learn from
Job 2 Pros: can do most work from home (which is also a con), higher base salary to start, comission on top of base, good benefits, no particular territory so he could sell to all his current connections
Job1 Cons: no commision, not sure if the pay increase each year is significant, away a few nights a week from sept-november
Job 2 Cons: After 2 years will work on 100% commision, working from home requires a lot of discipline, has been told from some sources that the company and its deliveries are not 100% reliable or on time which may affect his sales numbers

Just looking for some opinions!

Anytime you have to earn 100 percent from commission is not very good, in my opinion. I would rather take a job that will pay a salary even if its lower than the one offered in your other job. To rely soley on commission, especially if you have a family, is taking a risk and a big one at that. I would go for the sure thing. 2 years goes by fast then you have to rely on other people buying from you. If the economy drops and people no longer have the money to buy they will cut back.

Job#1 is probably better.
Reason: When deliveries and the company are not reliable YOU look bad. A salesperson has to come across as giving the best customer service. Also, if all work can be done from home then there is not much feedback from the employer. This is not good either.

Is he the sales type or not? if he is 2option is best, now if you’re seking security today 1st option is best. ask him what he wants and support him, both jobs are OK let him decide.
